Palm City lies across the St. Lucie River from Stuart and is mostly quiet neighborhoods, golf communities and shopping centers. For visitors it is a convenient, slightly cheaper base with easy access to I-95 and the Turnpike, and it has a few restaurants worth the trip from Stuart. Phipps Park, on the edge of Palm City, is a waterfront county campground on the Okeechobee Waterway with a boat ramp and fishing pier, popular with RV travelers.
West of the interstate the county changes quickly. State Road 76 follows the St. Lucie Canal toward Lake Okeechobee through pasture, citrus and pine flatwoods, and the land opens out into large public preserves. Allapattah Flats and the DuPuis Management Area are managed by the South Florida Water Management District for hiking, horseback riding, camping and seasonal hunting, and both are good places to see wading birds, deer and wild turkeys away from any crowds.
Indiantown, about 30 miles west of Stuart, is a small rural village that incorporated in 2017. Its best-known landmark is the Seminole Inn, a hotel built in 1926 by a railroad investor, which was sold in 2025 and is being restored; it has no reopening date yet. Timer Powers Park, in town, has a boat ramp, a fishing pier and a covered arena used for rodeos and horse shows.
At Port Mayaca, at the far western edge of the county, the St. Lucie Canal meets Lake Okeechobee. The lake’s scenic trail runs along the top of the Herbert Hoover Dike, and anglers launch here for the lake’s well-known bass fishing. Bring water and sun protection; services are few in this part of the county. The lake is also known for its sunsets over open water, which look more like a sea than a lake, and for the large wading birds that feed along the rim canal below the dike.
